The aim of Mastering Vocational Assessments is to assist assessors and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to make the assessment experience better for all stakeholders. If you are starting from scratch or building on and adapting what you have you can ask the 6 questions.
The first question is WHY
Here is a snippet from my soon-to-be-launched second book
Purpose, scope or the ‘WHY’ is the real reason for the assessment. It is the fundamental starting point if you are designing, creating or reviewing the quality and compliance of an assessment. ‘WHY’ assess at all is the obvious starting question.
Assessing a candidate is one thing, and the accurate recording of assessment outcomes is another. The ‘WHY' question also needs to include asking why record assessments? It is a skill to record evidence of an assessment activity and outcome accurately. However, even before this, there are other areas to be explored by determining the ‘WHY’ of assessment.
When determining what culture, environment, resources and timeframe to use for recording criteria, it's essential to base everything on the fundamental 'WHY' question. Assessment can be complicated because it involves considering numerous aspects, characteristics and factors. Complexity itself can differ depending on the higher the Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) level of the unit. It is easy to get disheartened at this point, as this all might sound a bit complicated, and we have only just begun. I ask you to persevere as we get through this. Actually, this complexity is why so many people don't attempt the assessment creation process – the common reason is that the process is just too hard, or it takes too long.
